Update: One dead, two seriously injured in Block Island plane crash. What we know.
NEW SHOREHAM – One of three people aboard a small airplane that crashed on Block Island on Wednesday, July 30, did not survive the crash, according to Block Island Fire Chief Chris Hobe.
The other two people aboard were seriously injured in the single-plane crash and airlifted off the island for medical treatment, said Hobe, who provided no further comment.
The crash drew firefighters and rescue teams to the east end of the runway.
According to the Rhode Island Airport Corp., at about 12:29 p.m., "a Cherokee Archer aircraft was involved in an accident at Block Island State Airport. There were three individuals on board at the time."
The airport corporation said emergency responders, including more than 20 personnel from New Shoreham fire and police departments, Rescue Squad, and on-site Rhode Island Airport Corp. operations staff, were immediately deployed to the scene.
